Wake County

Courthouse Plaza

The renovation of the Wake County Courthouse Plaza was a joint project between Wake County and the City of Raleigh, during the revitalization of Fayetteville Street. The design included an accessible entry for the courthouse, and created an open public square as a transition zone between the courthouse and Fayetteville Street. The plaza mediates a substantial grade change between street level and the courthouse entry, and provides multiple layers of seating and gathering spaces within a vibrant downtown block. Issues of structural engineering and waterproofing were critical, as the plaza sits atop a concealed parking deck.
